The Bendigo Spirit are the champions of Cygnett WNBL 24/25 Season with a  63 – 55 win against the Townsville Fire in front of a sold-out crowd at the Townsville Entertainment Centre.

After taking Game One by 10 points on Wednesday night in front of their home crowd, the Spirit stormed home on Sunday afternoon, putting on a third-quarter defensive masterclass to take the lead

League MVP Sami Whitcomb added to an already incredible season with a WNBL championship as well as the Rachael Sporn Grand Final MVP. Whitcomb was best-on with 26 points in the title-winning triumph.

“Honestly, there is no other team I would rather have won with,” said Whitcomb. “This was hard and so, so tough, but we earned it, and I’m so proud.”

Kelsey Griffin, Kelly Wilson and Marianna Tolo all celebrated their fifth WNBL championship, with Griffin and Wilson having been involved in the Spirit’s back-to-back championships in 2013 & 2014.  It was Bendigo’s third title in franchise history and a statement finish after a near-decade absence from the post-season.

It will be a moment to remember for Bendigo coach Kennedy Kereama, leading the Spirit to ultimate success in his first WNBL Championship.

This was the former New Zealand Tall Ferns coach’s sixth full season at the helm of a club after three years with the West Coast Waves (now the Perth Lynx) and two games in charge of the UC Capitals as interim coach.
